Race Day Checklist: Half Ironman

Screen Shot 2017-07-13 at 1.57.05 PMWhether you’re a newbie or an old pro, a triathlon checklist is a must have! This is a basic triathlon checklist for beginners, so feel free to recommend additional suggestions! As I begin slowly gathering all my good’s for this weekend’s 70.3 Ironman Racine, , I’ve had this on my mind and I’m super OCD so I like to pack EARLY & in separate bags so I know I’ve got all I need.
Bag #1 – SWIM:
  • Full body wetsuit
  • Race-issued swim cap for your designated wave
  • Extra caps (if it’s COLD!)
  • Goggles ( at least 2 pairs… you never know )
  • Crappy sandals I can throw away or don’t mind losing (Old Navy, I’m looking at you)
  • Quick dry towel
  • Body glide for my wetsuit
  • Tri shorts
  • Tri tank
  • Race-Issued ankle bracelet
Bag #2 – BIKE:
  • Bike – that has been pumped, prepped and checked!
  • Flat tire kit
  • Spare tire
  • A second towel (rainy days = disgusting shoes, shirts, apparel)
  • A THIRD towel & extra water bottle to wipe & dry those feet before your ride
  • Several water bottles ( 1 filled with nuun, 1 with water – at least – I usually try to chug a water bottle every 30 – 45 minutes )
  • Helmet – with sticker for race day attached
  • Sunglasses
  • Bike shoes
  • Several gus, clif’s new organic energy foods because I’ve gotten too grossed out by things lately, some honey stingers for good measure
  • Salt tabs (lifesaver during the half-ironman I swear to you)
  • Sunscreen
Bag #3- RUN:
  • 1-2 pairs of socks ( if it’s raining, I need a refresh!)
  • Running shoes
  • Headsweats visor
  • Extra hair ties
  • More gus
  • Salt tabs (in case my stomach hurts)
  • Race belt & number
MISC:
  • Tissues
  • Deodorant
  • MORE hair ties
  • Tape
  • Extra nuun
  • Extra gus
  • Extra change of clothes for after the event

What else does everyone pack? This is my first REAL long distance event of the year, here goes nothing
As always, all my racing & triathlon training is to support Ballou Skies, a charity whose mission is to provide funds for groundbreaking research that will assist young men afflicted with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Over the past 4 years, my team and I have raised $10,000 and hope to blow this year out of the water. Any dollar helps! We appreciate your support.

  1. Love the checklist idea. Forgetting something important, like goggles or shoes, on race day is always a fear of mine.

Also, that’s really admirable how you connect your race efforts to a charity. I just did a triathlon last weekend as part of Team Save the Children. It was really special to help make a positive impact through triathlon.

    Good luck this weekend!
